I went up to Vanak this evening and then ended up walking down to Park Said. There were no protests but police everywhere everywhere, not just in the squares but lining Valiasr street and alongside the park with motorcycles, vans, and pickup trucks at the ready. As I passed them, a squadron of riot police that had been waiting at an intersection got a walkie-talkie message and took off in a hurry in the direction of Valiasr Square. The camo uniformed and armored riot police all have matching red motorcycles; the labasha-e shakhsi ride on various probably personal bikes. There were even four Basijis standing at a quiet intersection of my neighborhood, which I've never seen before. Hopefully this is just today because of the inauguration, but it strikes me that it would be a much more effective tactic (if they can continue to spare the manpower--I think it must be open season for the mafia and petty criminals right now) to keep up a constant ubiquitous police presence to discourage protests rather than letting big groups gather and then attacking them, thus both allowing protesters to make successful disruptions/demonstrate solidarity and further alienating anyone watching. Maybe hence arrests of anyone wearing green in some parts of the city before they could rally--as reported by the LA Times, though I saw numerous people walking around with green clothing who the police weren't giving them trouble.
I really wish I had a camera phone--it would have been much easier to inconspicuously take photos/video with it than with the little film point-and-shoot I bought.
